What to ask current and former owners

Source review: 17 October 2026

Talk to people who own the business now and people who used to own it. The company can explain how its system is meant to work; these owners can describe their own experience of running it.

Ask about opening costs, early support, training and staffing. What took more time or money than expected? Were supplies and equipment reliable? How were disagreements handled? What would they investigate more closely if buying again?

Include operators with different experience levels, and avoid relying only on the people featured in promotional material. Keep their location, service mix and circumstances in mind: one person's experience does not establish what will happen in your market.

Use contact information supplied through the proper due-diligence process respectfully. Don't publish private conversations or personal details without permission.

Use the same questions with several people

Keep a short question list so you can compare answers. Ask what the owner expected before opening, what happened in practice and which documents would help explain the difference. Include newer and longer-established businesses and, where possible, former owners. Treat a company-provided reference as one perspective rather than a complete sample.

Turn experiences into things to verify

If someone describes an unexpected cost, ask which category it belonged to and compare that category with your own proposed documents. If they describe helpful support, ask who provided it and in what circumstances. Keep personal accounts separate from contractual promises. Do not publish names, contact details or private conversations without permission.
