WindowTintFranchise.comA resource for prospective owners

Local-market research worksheet

Research your local window tint market.

Gather local evidence about customers, competing services and the area you could serve. Keep sources, assumptions and unanswered questions beside your findings.

Start with one area and the services you plan to offer. Add evidence from published sources and your own research. A blank answer means it is still unknown.

This worksheet organizes your research. It does not calculate market potential, predict earnings, confirm territory availability or recommend a franchise.

US starter sources. Use the relevant local statistical agencies and authorities elsewhere.

Entries stay on this page and are not submitted. Print or download your notes before leaving; this tool does not save them for a later visit. Do not enter customer names, contact details, confidential business information or financial account details.

01 / Your research

Define the area you are researching.

Describe the place you could realistically work in. Your proposed service area, a source’s geography and a contractual territory may all have different boundaries.

Your area and services

Automotive, residential, commercial, a combination, or still deciding.

Describe a realistic journey or boundary. A straight-line radius is not a travel-time estimate.

When you started or last reviewed these notes. This is separate from the source-review date below.

A note about geography

Census ZIP Code Tabulation Areas are statistical approximations, not identical to postal delivery ZIP Codes. A county or ZCTA statistic may not fit your service boundary. Census: ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.

02 / Your research

Gather evidence about possible customers.

More residents, homes, vehicles or businesses do not by themselves establish demand for window film. Look for what people need and how they buy.

Automotive: what would you check?

What evidence describes local vehicles or vehicle-owning households? What have prospective customers, dealerships or fleet operators said about the service, timing and buying process? Keep vehicle stock separate from a real request for work.

Start with Census Business Builder, ACS housing profile definitions (2024 five-year release) or FHWA: 2024 state vehicle registrations (MV-1). Household vehicle availability and registrations measure different things.

FHWA MV-1 is state-level 2024 registration data, published January 2026. It does not count local tint buyers or untreated vehicles. Do not allocate a state figure to a town by population share. Earlier estimated figures and later state-reported figures do not automatically make a comparable trend.

Residential: what would you check?

What does the housing mix show about the properties you intend to serve? Who can approve alterations and provide access? Which conversations or requests support a specific customer need?

Start with Census Business Builder, ACS housing profile definitions (2024 five-year release) or Census Building Permits Survey.

Housing tenure, type and age are context, not purchase intent or technical suitability. The Building Permits Survey describes new privately owned residential units authorized by permits. Authorization is not a completed project, film installation or customer commitment; this is not a commercial-construction dataset.

Commercial: what would you check?

Which premises or organizations would you serve? Who controls the glazing, approves projects, arranges access and sets purchasing terms? What shows a real problem, buying process and timing?

Start with Census Business Builder, Census County Business Patterns and your city or county’s official property, planning or procurement records.

Establishments, buildings, tenants, owners and purchasing decisions are different units. An industry count does not identify properties needing film or organizations willing to buy it. Keep municipal records’ own definitions and dates.

Using estimates and seasonal context

ACS figures are estimates. Keep margins of error and source notes. Compare like products and periods; avoid overlapping five-year periods or one-year versus five-year estimates. Five-year estimates describe a period, not one recent year. Census: Choosing ACS data · Census: Comparing ACS data.

NOAA U.S. Climate Normals can provide optional seasonal context. Record the station, variable and normal period. Climate is not a bookings forecast, proof of a property’s needs or an energy-savings calculation.

03 / Your research

Record the competing options you can verify.

Look at services competing for the same customer and need. A search listing is a starting point. Confirm what each provider offers and where it works, and record the date.

Keep observed providers separate from industry counts

An operator offering several services is one observed provider. Distinguish separate branches. Search results, reviews and establishment counts do not establish market share; do not use them to assign quality ratings.

Census industry counts are context, not a verified tint-competitor list. Census: 2022 NAICS automotive glass classification includes automotive glass repair, replacement and tinting under 811122. It is broader than tint alone. Architectural work may fall into broader categories according to a business’s primary activity.

Census County Business Patterns covers establishments with paid employees. Census Nonemployer Statistics: About covers qualifying businesses without paid employees, with different coverage and industry detail. Keep program, year, industry definition, geography and release notes. Do not add these figures together here or equate them with the providers you observed.

04 / Your research

Check territory and practical constraints.

Your research area is not proof of contractual rights. Record unresolved questions, the written source and who can clarify them.

What exact boundary is being offered, and where is it recorded in the current documents?

Who else may serve customers there, including other outlets and online channels?

What restrictions apply outside the area, and what conditions could change the rights?

What premises, access, permit or operating questions still need an answer?

Where to check the details

For US offers, Item 12 is a starting point for territorial disclosures. Read it with the proposed agreement and maps. A protection label does not explain every reserved channel or exception. This worksheet does not interpret contracts. FTC: A Consumer’s Guide to Buying a Franchise.

Confirm premises and operating requirements with the relevant authorities before committing to a location. This tool does not determine zoning, licensing or product compliance. SBA: Launch your business.

Turn unknowns into next steps.

Keep the questions that could change your plan visible. Record what would resolve each one and when you want to check again.

06 / Your research

Write a short research summary.

Keep source dates and unanswered questions with your summary. A completed worksheet records your research; it does not establish that a market is viable.

What you have learned

Keep the next decision in view.

Use your findings alongside the startup-cost worksheet and questions for current and former operators. Check the actual offer and get independent advice for your location before committing.
