The takeaway
Ziebart describes itself as an employee-owned franchisor. Buying a local franchise is a separate transaction. Check what the agreement includes, what support is promised and what current and former operators say about their experience.
The change in the company’s history
Ziebart’s official timeline says employees bought Ziebart International Corporation through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan, or ESOP, in 1994. The timeline gives a year rather than a precise transaction date. This is the company’s own account of its history.
In an April 16, 2026 post aimed at prospective franchisees, Ziebart continued to describe itself as an ESOP company. It presented employee ownership as a strength of its support organization. That is the company’s argument, rather than independently verified evidence of better support or stronger franchise profits.
Two different kinds of ownership
The US Department of Labor describes an ESOP as a retirement benefit plan that holds company shares in a trust for participants and beneficiaries. It is a way for employees to have an ownership interest in their employer.
A franchise purchase serves a different purpose. The Federal Trade Commission explains the franchise model as operating a business using a franchisor’s name and system, with fees, rules and contractual obligations. A buyer should not assume that a franchise fee also buys shares in the parent company.
What to ask before buying
For a prospective Ziebart operator, the practical next step is to ask what the local purchase includes, who provides training and ongoing help, and which commitments appear in the current documents. Speak with current and former operators about their experience.
An ownership structure is useful background. It does not replace checking the costs, obligations and day-to-day work of the particular franchise you are considering.
This historical explainer uses Ziebart’s own timeline and published description, with government resources for general definitions. It does not verify ESOP plan details, individual eligibility or financial results, and is not legal, tax or retirement-plan advice.
